Sunday Sermon - 09/22/2019 - 1 Corinthians 7:25-40
Opening Prayer:
O Holy God, you are infinitely beautiful, and so you describe yourself in an infinite number of ways. Certainly, you are the Creator, he who caused all things to exist. And you are the Sustainer of your creation, he who out of infinite mercy causes the sun to rise on the just and the unjust. But in your divine providence, you have put forth this psalm before us, reminding us today that you are he who“takes up the weak and lifts up the poor from the ashes,” who “sets them with princes,” who“makes the woman of a childless house to be a joyful mother of children.” Thank you for caring for all of your creation, and for taking special care of those who suffer. The gods of the world champion the strong and mighty, the persuasive and the influential, but Jesus Christ stands with the lowly, and cares for the weak and the poor and the fatherless and the widow and foreigner! Lord, we hold to the glorious promise, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven ,” and we thank you loving us.
We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
Closing Prayer:
O Holy God, you know how infrequently we come to you with our private joys and silent sorrows; you know how shallow are our prayers of thanksgiving; how despondent we become when we suffer; how we isolate ourselves even though you are never distant. And yet you are still and ever our unchanging friend, still holding out the invitation to fellowship, never far away. O Christ, thank you for your perfect consistency and divine patience! Lord, strike from us all unbelief that you are patiently waiting for us to lean on you in all circumstances, even as the father waited for his prodigal sons. May your children break the habit of spiritual isolation, from each other and from you, that you would be honored in the peace and contentedness of your church.
We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
