Sunday Sermon - 09/29/2019 - 1 Corinthians 8

Opening Prayer: O Holy God, though you know our careless thoughts and self-focused desires, you nevertheless have pity on us, and you hear our prayers. Truly, you are merciful and compassionate. May your church sing your praises with true humility and devotion, and so may you be honored in hearts of your people. We pray this is in the name of Jesus. Amen. Closing Prayer: O Holy God, simple and yet profound is the truth that you are the ever-steady, unchanging foundation of all creation. Much of our earthly sadness stems from the temporal nature of the people and things we love, and we mourn when we witness the decay and death of the relationships we believed were permanent. You are the Great

Sunday Sermon - 09/22/2019 - 1 Corinthians 7:25-40

Opening Prayer: O Holy God, you are infinitely beautiful, and so you describe yourself in an infinite number of ways. Certainly, you are the Creator, he who caused all things to exist. And you are the Sustainer of your creation, he who out of infinite mercy causes the sun to rise on the just and the unjust. But in your divine providence, you have put forth this psalm before us, reminding us today that you are he who“takes up the weak and lifts up the poor from the ashes,” who “sets them with princes,” who“makes the woman of a childless house to be a joyful mother of children.” Thank you for caring for all of your creation, and for taking special care of those who suffer. The gods of the worl

Sunday Sermon - 09/15/2019 - 1 Corinthians 7:10-24

Opening Prayer: O Holy God, in your mercy and loving-kindness you judge us on the perfect merit of Jesus Christ, and not on our sin-soiled accounts. May this Good News be the central joy of your people, and may your church draw ever-increasing peace from the truth that you are the God of compassion. And so may you be honored in the contentment of your people. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen. Closing Prayer: Lord Jesus, you are present in all our trials, and wants, and woes, just as you are present in our rest, and health, and peace; and so you are the friend who never leaves. You are the friend who was our nearest companion in the womb, caring for us before we were known by anyone else

Sunday Sermon - 09/08/2019 - 1 Corinthians 7:1-9

Opening Prayer: O Lord, truest friend, walking along the path of righteousness often feels no less wearisome than walking along the path of wickedness, and the discontent that flares up in our hearts make it difficult to discern on which path we are walking in any given moment. The beauty of your gospel is that we can rest trusting that you are protecting us, that you are tending to our real needs, and that we are never alone. Thank you for your guiding Spirit that leads us through the good places we don’t want to go, and steers us from the evil places that we desire so much. Amen. Closing Prayer: O Surest Friend, in our better moments we only begin to comprehend the the infinite difference

Sunday Sermon - 09/01/2019 - Amos 8

Opening Prayer: O Holy God, happy are those who delight in your commandments, for your decrees are are firm-fixed and sure. Hypotheses blossom and wither, people grow and falter, cultures flourish and fade, but your commands transcend all of these, they are an immovable line straighter than the horizon, harder than granite. How we need such sure truths to line the path of righteousness, for our hearts and minds are so easily allured into the weeds of passing fashionable ideas. You have blessed your people with an anchor of truth in a world of ever-changing desires and morality; thank you for your commands. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen. Closing Prayer: O Holy God, it is a sobering
