Sunday Sermon - 09/15/2019 - 1 Corinthians 7:10-24

Opening Prayer:

O Holy God, in your mercy and loving-kindness you judge us on the perfect merit of Jesus Christ, and not on our sin-soiled accounts. May this Good News be the central joy of your people, and may your church draw ever-increasing peace from the truth that you are the God of compassion. And so may you be honored in the contentment of your people.

We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Closing Prayer:

Lord Jesus, you are present in all our trials, and wants, and woes, just as you are present in our rest, and health, and peace; and so you are the friend who never leaves. You are the friend who was our nearest companion in the womb, caring for us before we were known by anyone else, providing for us from our very beginning. You are the friend who weeps with us in our darkest days, you yourself

knowing the sting of loneliness and loss more than anyone, you who were abandoned by the very men who promised that they would die with you. Is it not divine providence and the mark of divine artistry, that the first negative, “It is not good that the man should be alone,” is remedied in the final words of Matthew’s gospel, “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age?” You

have known our weakness and need, from the beginning of beginnings, and you cared for us though age after age, giving promise and fulfillment in a continuous flow of mercy, to us who constantly need mercy, to us who so often choose to be alone, to us who mistake your yoke of tenderness for a yoke of oppression. And yet, you remain, even today, especially today, ready and eager to receive lost sheep and prodigal children. Bless you, Lord Jesus, our truest friend, our

nearest companion, our faithful shepherd! Thank your never leaving us or forsaking us.

We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
