Sunday Sermon - 10/06/2019 - 1 Corinthians 9:1-18
Opening Prayer:
O Holy God, there is a certain levity that you give us, a holy posture of worrilessness that you command us to put on. Indeed, such a holy air of ease shows a great trust in you to execute justice and provide for the needs of your children. We confess that we do not always trust you in such a fretless way; forgive us for our anger, jealousy, and impatience. Grant that we would take delight in you yourself, learn stillness and patience, and learn to refrain from anger; and so may you be honored in the peacefulness and contentment of your church.
We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
Closing Prayer:
Lord Christ, the enormity of your love of sinners is incomprehensible to our finite minds. How is it that you love the sinner, one who ignores you, who thinks little of and infrequently about you, who abuses your patience and mercy? And how is it that you love the sinner continually, eternally, planning for the care of that soul from the infinite past, taking upon yourself that sinner’s punishment by dying on the cross, daily interceding with prayers unknown, even sending your Holy Spirit to dwell in that sinner’s heart? And how is it that you care not only for one such sinner, but for all, in all places, in all times? Though we bear your image, we are not like you, for we struggle to show compassion and mercy and patience to even our closest neighbors. Truly, though your love is often spoken of, it is never fully understood, only ever grasped the way a child holds the little finger of its father’s hand, thinking its hold is secure, blind to the tremendous patience and care and provision exhibited in the father’s grasp of the child. Infinite is the love of Christ! Glorious is his tenderness! Thank you for loving us, for being our eternal friend, for pleading for us.
