Sunday Sermon - 08/25/2019 - 1 Corinthians 6:12-20
Opening Prayer:
O Holy God, in our finitude we see very little of the sin in our hearts. Even worse, the quality of our limited sight is poor, and we see in others sins that are not sins, and we see in ourselves virtues that are not virtues! We have immense difficulty fighting even the very few sins that we acknowledge; how are we to uproot the sins that we do not see? Finite is our vision, and even more so our ability to do good. Truly, “There is none righteous, no not one.”And so we praise you for your infinite mercy and infinite goodness, for you forgive all of our sins and you heal all our infirmities, even our hidden sins that we ourselves have yet to see. In one sense your mercy is expensive, costing the very blood Christ; and in another sense, your mercy is free, for it is infinitely abundant such that you planned our redemption from eternity past, and it extinguishes our guilt as a tidal wave extinguishes a mere candle.What a joy it is to ponder your magnificent infinitude, O Glorious God! Unending joy belongs to your saints, because you yourself are limitless.

Closing Prayer:
O Holy God, it is peculiarly sweet that the great offense of your Gospel becomes the great joy of the Christian. Need of the Savior was offensive to our unsaved souls, for it implies that we are in arrogant error. And yet, this becomes our great joy and pleasure, to ponder how the supremely lovely mercy of God extends to even the most arrogant sinners, even we who once prayed like the haughty Pharisee, “God, I thank you that I am not like other men...even like this tax collector.”Thank you for your mercy, Lord! Thank you for breaking down our pride! May your Church continually say with the tax collector, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner,” and then glory in JesusChrist who is supremely merciful! May your Church say of themselves the words of the Apostle,“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief,” and then wonder at the mercy of the Christ on the cross paying our debt! May this be the pleasing grief and mournful joy that moves your people to daily acts of great love, that our Father in heaven would be honored by people he ransomed.
