O Holy God, you are the refuge and deliverer and strong rock of your Church. You are the great cause of her sustained existence, and the sole reason for the bud of righteousness and humility that she bears. Thank you for your protection and providence. May your church cling to you and you alone as her source of unity and strength, and may the hearts of your people glow with divine humility. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
O Holy God, how peculiar is the thought that our sorrows and joys are not wholly ours; indeed, as your plans for us extend into eternity past and into eternity future, in some sense our troubles and triumphs are infinitely more your burdens and successes than ours. Sweet, then, is the thought that our sorrow is never entirely our own, to be endured alone, as though you do not see our sadness, as though you are uniformed of our needs. And sweet, too, is the thought that our joys are always communal, if only, and especially, shared with you alone. Is not every pure joy celebrated more in heaven than here on earth, there, where your sinless angels and redeemed Church know the true worth of thankfulness and contentment? And, who can say what profound realty lies in the truth that the mighty Christ experienced in his mind and body the woes and joys of humanity during his days on earth? How true, how unfathomably true, are the words, “Jesus wept?” We are claimed by a Savior who knows our pains and joys, who experienced them with infinite sensitivity to the reality of sin and the glory of God! Let your Church never choose to bear burdens and celebrate victories alone, as though our sorrows to too significant for others to understand, as though our joys are too insignificant to share! Thank you for never for never leaving us alone, for never forsaking us. Let your Church do as you do, never isolating or abandoning each other, and so may you be honored in the unbreakable unity of your people. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
