Who is a Christian?

What does it mean to be a Christian? How do you define it? Would you call yourself one? Today, there is a lot of confusion over the use of the term "Christian" and who it should be applied to. Most Americans define the term "Christian" to mean a good or moral person, or one that regularly attends a Christian religious service. However, the Bible defines a Christian in a simpler, more direct way: as one who follows Jesus Christ.

So what does if mean to follow Jesus Christ? Well, first and foremost it means to acknowledge and receive what he has already done for you through his death and resurrection. The following paragraphs describe how you can become a "true" Christian.

Jesus Christ died on the cross, in our place, to pay the penalty we deserved for our sins. On the third day He rose again. The Bible makes it clear that a person must only place their faith in Jesus Christ for forgiveness of sins. (See Scripture references below.)

This faith is not a mere intellectual assent, but it is a complete trust in what Christ did on the cross, as opposed to trusting any good work of their own to earn forgiveness. Salvation, then, is wholly a work of the grace of God.

One who has this faith is a Christian, a child of God, and is promised eternal life in Heaven forever.

Is this a decision you would like to make? Though no prayer is necessary for salvation, you may express your faith in prayer. A fine example is as follows:

Lord, I know that I am a sinner. But I believe and accept that Jesus died for my sins and rose again. I know I am forgiven by grace through faith alone. Thank you, Lord. Amen.
